AI in Africa Must Be Functional, Profitable & Useful
So That It Can Eradicate Poverty and Improve Education
Today, I wanted to share this video that’s been stuck in my mind for weeks.
I am working on a piece about Artificial Intelligence in Africa, partly inspired by this video. In the meantime, please listen to what Tonee Ndung'u has to say about AI in Africa and kindly share your thoughts about the things he highlights.
What Stuck With Me
AI cannot leave Africa behind.
For Africa, it goes beyond responsive, equitable, and responsible AI. It is more about functional, profitable, and useful AI that can eradicate poverty and improve education.
When it comes to AI in the continent, data access and green computing are huge concerns, and the continent needs to collaborate with the world to address these.
For AI to benefit the continent, Africa must start leveraging its talented population now! If by 2050, the largest and youngest workforce available will be from Africa, then the most brilliant thing is to ensure that a large percentage of that workforce will be AI experts.
As a result, Africa will become indispensable to the world (as Tonee said, Africans will no longer need boats, they will be invited in). Also, that talented group will ensure Africa maximizes AI's benefits.
What do you think?
P.S Tonee Ndung'u is a serial techpreneur in Kenya. He is not only the founder of Nailab but also Kytabu.
Thanks for reading Africa: Not an Afterthought, where we lead the conversation on how Africa can leverage tech, trade (AfCFTA), regional integration, and Pan-Africanism to build a continent that is no longer an afterthought.
Kindly
Thanks for sharing this video! I'm looking forward to the post you're working on. I'd like to hear more about the logistics of how this would be done. I don't think anyone would disagree with what you or Tonee have said. But how do we ensure logistically that AI's potential is actualized on the continent, that we're not skipped over as we have been in recent history, or that only a segment of the population benefits? There are definitely many ideas out there.
