During Zimbabwe's independence celebrations last Thursday (18th April), China announced it would write off some of Zimbabwe’s debt. The exact amount remains undisclosed, but as of 2022, Zimbabwe owed China approximately $2 billion.
China’s ambassador said the move demonstrated Beijing’s willingness to help the country overcome financial challenges.
Across social media, Africans had varying reactions to this announcement. Here are some of them:

Amidst these positive and negative reactions, mine was somewhere in between.
I cannot help but think of Wangari Maathai’s quote:
“The world’s interactions with Africa are not necessarily motivated by altruism, but by the self-interest of states seeking to maximize their opportunities and minimize their costs, often at the expense of those who are not in a position to do either.”
― Wangari Maathai, The Challenge for Africa
So, which opportunities is China looking to maximize, and which cost is it seeking to minimize? What will Zimbabwe have to sacrifice because they are not in a position to maximize opportunities or minimize costs?
I don’t know yet, but chances are high that the scales will tip more favorably in China’s favor when it is said and done.
What about you? What do you think?
